Bret showed up and got a game in with John while I was finally able to show up and get beaten by Ashley. Hopefully John can relay how his game went...

Bret held up the boyz for the better part of the game by dropping his Dragon mounted General and manticore mounted mage in my rear while his fast cavalry ran rings around my boar boyz. I had some success in the last couple of turns but I think Bret took it easy on me. Good game Bret. Look forward to seeing you at our next meeting

As a dark elf player, just what I like to hear.

It does make me wonder if the dark elf approach to the game is less fun for others though as one of the armies that's got fast cavalry in core and is encouraged to use it in numbers. I don't remember seeing any Marauder horsemen or Goblin wolf riders when playing against Chaos or Orks, though I haven't played against the undead armies to see if they use it.

It probably has more to do with the perception that Dark Elf players NEED to run it like that. I live my life around making sure to never go netlist with my armies.

I don't really want to say that there's a perception of need. It's more insidious than that. You start with one or two units of dark riders and they work well, killing war machines, providing flank charges and dealing with similar enemy units.

Then, your opponents get used to them and start actively trying to kill them, and well, they're cheap, so why not get another one so they can kill one and you still get to do what your were doing before. But having another one works out to be a better than linear improvement, so you start thinking about another, or you play against dwarfs and think that those crossbows you were taking just aren't doing very much, but those dark riders cost about the same and really helped, and slowly but surely they multiply, because as core, there's always room for one more.

I know I saw you take a second unit of them in that 3000 point game back in December. Are you not at least somewhat tempted to play both in smaller games, even if it does bring you closer to some 3-5 units of them netlist?

The club matches are 3,000 now unless requested otherwise. We also just got three more Bolt Throwers and it's time to start figuring out what to cut.

Marauder Horsemen are pretty useful. Bit pricey for what they do but a bit of short range shooting and mobility in the otherwise clumsy Mortal Chaos Core never hurts.

The problem with the Undead fast cavalry is they're not real Fast Cavalry. Can't march, see? Dire Wolves don't even have a rider, so they're short on an attack and a saving throw compared to everything else in the category. I used to use four units of them as purely sacrificial pieces: die at the right place and block charges at the right angle for my heavy cavalry to get in and clean up.

The Tomb Kings light horse are essentially just ablative wounds for a mounted Liche Priest. For the conventional flank-and-spank charge role, Tomb Kings have chariots that have the Fast Cavalry reform rules. I do think there's a place for cavalry in Tomb Kings armies but it's the rarely seen 16 heavy horsemen (or, as I like to think of them, Unit Strength 32 Movement 8 - essentially I treat them as an infantry hammer since that's the kind of speed they move at anyway).

I have to say it: I LOVE that minotaur. I have a metal recast for WHQ and I adore it

I'm constantly pricing those monopos minotaurs, and if I can ever find some at a decent price instead of the stupid aftermarket prices currently I'd buy about 40 more of them and do a 3,000 Point Army of nothing but minotaurs and a doombull or two.

Right then, Just Tony, forty minotaurs sounds less like an army and more like a stampede with a points limit 😄 mind you, the aftermarket prices are bloody daft, so I reckon you'd need a second mortgage before the first Doombull turned up. Fair enough though, id pay to see someone try to deploy that lot on a standard table.

If i did I'd be inclined to run them in blocks of 12, at 4x3
