Re: The Battle of The Cracked Gate

Fair credit here, High Elf aesthetics with extra leaves stuck on would work really well for a Wood Elf army from 4th - 5th edition , where the 1990s Wood Elf model range dovetails much more closely to the High Elf visual style, or even a late 8th edition one where the 'High Elves with extra leaves ...

Re: Twenty Years of Raisin' Dead (Vampire Counts showcase/retrospective)

Carmilla's Masque | Vampire, Dire Wolves, Banshee With the Skeleton Warriors assembled I was almost in position to start actually playing games. All I needed was some fast stuff, and ideally some cheap fast stuff, which is where the plastic Wolves came in. One box of Goblin Wolf Riders, pass the Gob...

Re: Twenty Years of Raisin' Dead (Vampire Counts showcase/retrospective)

These are the Tales of the Skeleton Warriors... You don't get far as a Supreme Lord of the Undead with only five Zombies, and I had a very clear vision for how I wanted my Army of Sylvania to look, even before the Storm of Chaos rules appeared and set my choices in stone. The Zombies were going to ...

Re: The Battle of The Cracked Gate

To say nothing of how I'm still not quite ready to let go of the 'lightly fingered guerilla force using light cheap mobile siege equipment' angle just yet - it took the Dwarf crossfire of doom on turn 4 to even get me thinking about trading the log ram up to a full-scale battering model, and failin...

Alas, they're insufficiently pointy for that to pass the "yeah yeah" check. The temptation to stick googly eyes on model leylandii is never far away, though.

Re: Wood Elves 1500pts

The single Branchwraith with no Dryads is unusual (not a bad thing!) but slightly inefficient as a spellcaster (she can only use two of the three Power dice your army will generate). I think there's value in her as a mainly defensive caster, with the Spite that gives her an extra Dispel die (I can't...

Re: The Battle of The Cracked Gate

A challenge for the Wood Elves, certainly; besieging a castle with your flounces and flights is no easy matter, even when it's not full of rock-solid, pipe-smoking, beard-beer-and-belly-having Dwarves in their natural habitat (high up, behind walls, and you're coming to them). I think you did well t...

Re: Twenty Years of Raisin' Dead (Vampire Counts showcase/retrospective)

Curious as I am to see the original colour, I am actually quite liking the green base rims. They bring a much needed splash of colour and a sharp pop to what is otherwise a very dark muted palette of mostly blacks and greys. Interesting choice assigning reconnaissance to a lone character rather tha...

Re: 5th Edition Online Rules Index

I've created an online searchable reference for all the core rules of 5th edition. This includes the core Rulebook, Battle Book and Magic supplement. I've also index the FAQs from the Direwolf FAQ Council and official GW ones. I find it to be a useful tool for quick rule look ups. Hope you find it ...

Re: Twenty Years of Raisin' Dead (Vampire Counts showcase/retrospective)

Everything Old Is New Again (Vampire Lord) There have been three Lords Ruthven, over the years. The first Lord Ruthven was the other Mordheim Vampire - the one with the energetically flapping cloak that looked fantastic but was a bit of a bugger to rank up. My original figure was placed so far forw...

Twenty Years of Raisin' Dead (Vampire Counts showcase/retrospective)

Christmas 2003 was where it all started, really. I'd had Warhammer Fantasy Battle bits and bobs before, playing a handful of games with starter set materials or the Chaos Warriors I'd collected because a 3000 point army could be had for a hundred quid (if you spent a quarter of it on a Greater Daemo...

Re: Chaos Warriors are actually kinda bad....

I am going to take the Kakapo Corner in this one, flying my own quixotic flag. This has little to do with optimisation or lore but will embrace the original reason for my getting into WFB, and Chaos Warriors when they were their own army list: frugaliteeeeeh ! When I was a young warthog, building ar...

Re: The Effectiveness of Spears in 6th Edition

Spears are a "do as I say, not as I do" option for my beloved undead. Skeleton Warriors aren't there to kill things by attacking them - they win by attrition, squeaking out by one point and forcing the auto-break through fear. A 5+ save isn't great, but it's better than nowt - keeps their ...

I'm afraid I have a doctor's note and a note from my mother excusing me from playing High Elves, thinking about playing High Elves, or treating High Elves with anything less than contempt. THEREFORE! As a lifelong Undead player (and one whose last table time involved a table dense with movement-rest...

Re: Pitched Battle (Chaos vs Tomb Kings)

Chaos are always a tough match for Tomb Kings, I find: usually built for solid Dispel power, lots of T4 troops with good saves that the Skeleton profile struggles to grind down, and S5/S7 easily available to Mortal units, the magic numbers for busting up T3 infantry and chariots. You're quite right ...

Re: Contrast paint

I've been painting with a lot of glazes over grey primer for the last thirteen or so years anyway, so it's not a radical departure for me. My current 40K army is all done with Liquitex ink that I think behaves pretty similarly to Contrast (i.e. streaks and pools a lot but is self shading, especially...

Re: Kakapo Approved

I like the principle behind the Daemon army. I also like that you've included a monster customiser for people who want to bring in their Soul Grinders, Skull Cannons and Hellflayer Chariots or whatever else they own, without explicitly dragging those units back in time. The principle of Daemon Princ...

Re: Instruments of Destruction, Tools of Foul Play | Necron VDR profiles and Tesla weapons

I did spot one silly absent-minded error where the Obelisk seems to be missing a Structure Point stat, which in turn will also probably affect its points since Structure Points have a cost attached (which I missed for quite some time myself because it's buried in a tiny little footnote nestled in a...

Re: Instruments of Destruction, Tools of Foul Play | Necron VDR profiles and Tesla weapons

CHAPTER DISAPPROVED | DIRTY HOMEBREW RULES | PURISTS ADVANCE WITH CAUTION The later Necron Codex would also introduce us to a new category of weapon, sitting alongside the Gauss guns we know and love (or tolerate). Tesla weapons, for those who were out of the loop, don't deal the concentrated extra-...

Instruments of Destruction, Tools of Foul Play | Necron VDR profiles and Tesla weapons

Why U Do Dis Thing? The short version is "because I own a more modern Necron army, and I'd like to walk my full collection back into the third and fourth edition rules." The slightly longer version is "because Necron armies in third and fourth edition 40K often became quite... dull t...

Soup, soup, soup! Going all in on one God will focus you too far in one direction. Grab both your books and start that greatest hits tour. The Chaos army I played into a couple of years ago at Resurrection would be a decent start, I think. it's not as easy to play as mono-god armies but it has more ...

Re: Repository for 40k rules

I don't know if anyone's done a Wahapedia (2004 edition), but most of the actual books are extant in either the Wilson archive (Facebook is awful but has its uses) or the Trove's torrent (which is appallingly organised, and I don't recommend using it for anything other than White Dwarf).

What even is Wood Elf siege equipment - a Treeman with rope ladders hanging off his armpits?
